Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a tiny, sleepy town. It is a part of the island that has been called "the West Island." West Island has a lot of diverse communities. For those who haven't been aware of it frequently think it is a separate, west-facing island. It is often cited as the location of birth of Amanda Brugel but while that is true, her stay there was short. Brugel grew-up in Courtice close to Oshawa in Ontario. She was determined to be a professional dancer but due to an explosive increase in her height, she outgrew the dance partners she had. In an interview with Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I am 6 feet, 1 inch." As I got bigger than my male partners, I quit. Many former dancers turn to acting and in Brugel's case it was a nudge from an instructor in drama at high school which led her in the right direction. The teacher recommended that she take part in an audition for the annual school production. The teacher who suggested she pursue a part the school's annual show. This led to the award of a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and earned the Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in the year 2000. Her career spans 20 years and she has been in over 60 productions that have screened on large screens as well as smaller screens. Her most recognizable role was the one of Rita (pictured below) on The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel was the sole Canadian cast member in the season 1 of the show and was not seen much.
